General information

The International Chair in Blockchain for Cybersecurity, CyberChain, presents the professional course in Computer Forensics, a free online training programme available on the e4you platform, lasting 115 hours.

Both the chair and the training programme are coordinated by the Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), the University of Salamanca and the BISITE Research Group.

This course aims to professionally train students who want to investigate, collect, analyse and preserve digital evidence in order to subsequently present their findings in court. In this way, the Forensic Expert is expected to take on the fight against online crime, acting as an Internet detective.

Course competencies:
  • Understand the legal framework applicable to computer forensics.
  • Apply techniques for acquiring and preserving digital evidence while ensuring chain of custody.
  • Use tools such as: OpenText TX2/Bridge, Magnet AXIOM, Cellebrite UFED.
  • Analyse digital evidence from Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Analyse digital evidence from Android and iOS mobile devices and subsequently extract information.
  • Prepare expert reports using appropriate language and ensuring they are legally valid.
  • Defend an expert report in a simulated court environment.
Methodology: 

The course will provide a cross-disciplinary learning experience, as in addition to providing technical materials such as readings and videos, students will also be required to complete practical exercises in order to reinforce concepts and expand their knowledge.

The training is structured into five blocks:

  • Module 1. Legal Framework and Role of the Expert.
    • Synchronous classes: Monday, 26 January (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.).
  • Module 2. Evidence Acquisition and Preservation.
    • Synchronous classes: Monday, 2 February (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.).
  • Module 3. Forensic Analysis of Systems.
    • Synchronous classes: Monday, 9 February (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.).
  • Module 4. Mobile Device Forensics.
    • Synchronous classes: Monday, 16 February (4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.).
  • Module 5. Expert Reports and Trial Defence.
    • Synchronous classes: Monday, 23 February (4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.).
